Pro 123 Race Report -

The final Pro/1/2/3 race was marked by two things: the emergence of Tim Unkert (Capital Bike) and the team Les Cyclistes. Tim capped a dominating day by winning the race in a small sprint among his breakaway companions. The break, with the strong men of the race series like Mike Norton (Somerset), Brian Wirtz (Zephyr), Stephen Grey (Les Cyclistes), and John McGovern (Les Cyclistes) lapped the field. McGovern, who recently joined Les Cyclistes, provided much of the consistency in the break, while the others provided bursts of speed while testing it. Unkert ended up taking the overall win due to his top placing in the final week. He was also (mistakenly, unfortunately) awarded the team prize, when on a double check of the figures, Les Cyclistes (with McGovern's 3 points for the last week) actually should have the prize. Amazingly, Unkert earned 20 team points on his own, to Les Cycliste's 23 points. Kudos to both, one for his two victories, the other for the amazing consistency which earned them the overall team prize.

Cat 3/4 Race Report -

The final Cat 3/4 race was tension filled as many riders considered themselves in the hunt for the overall win. With overall leader Brian Haas (Ridgefield Bank) away due to work, the rest of the contenders lined up, eager to take the spoils of victory. Primary favorite had to be David Ebeling (WebEvent.com) in second place, and Vincent Citron (Moneygram) in third. Significantly, Citron, a magnificent field sprinter when on form, had about 10 teammates in a 70 rider field. Ebeling was accompanied by about 5, a couple of them fatigued from their fight in the Cat 4 race. Another contender was last year's Cat 5 winner, Anthony Allesio (Laurel), who this year actually won the previous week's Pro/1/2/3 race. As the race started, Moneygram attacked aggressively, spending a great deal of strength in wearing down Ebeling and his WebEvent teammates. Allesio, strangely enough, was sitting in for a good part of the race, content to wait for the Pro/1/2/3 race to try and do something. Other teams in the mix included Les Cyclistes, Zephyr, and Capital Bike. The Moneygram tactics worked, and although they lost a few riders in a late race crash, they had enough horsepower to keep Citron at the front. Ebeling called on his WebEvent.com teammate John Fox to lead out the sprint, with Aki Sato (New Canaan Cyclery) behind Fox. Fox leapt around and to the front of the field at about 600m to go, pulling off at just about 400m to go. Sato took over and pulled off at about 200m to go, unfortunately holding up Paul Marchese (GMBC) who chose that moment to jump on the outside. Allesio had taken Sato's wheel, and led out with a quad-withering jump. In fact, he pulled clear and won decisively. Citron, sitting 4th before the sprint, finished a strong second. Ebeling, his legs exhausted, ended the day in 6th place. Citron, although tied in points with Haas, took the overall. Allesio, one point behind, took third overall. Ebeling, tied with Allessio, got knocked off the podium to finish third. Each year, the 3/4 race is the most hotly contested race, and this one was no exception.

M40+ Race Report -

The M40 race ended up a tribute to Morgan Stebbin's (CTS) strength. Unbelievably, he won all but one race, and he got second in that one. John Funk (GMBC) won that first week, and with his youthful demeanor and riding style, when he left the field, Stebbins thought he was a junior racer! Only a few laps later he learned who was really off the front, but Funk had a gap that he held till the finish. From then on, Stebbins didn't allow Funk to get away at all. Today, he did not let anyone get away either. Decisively, he won the race, taking with it an astounding 43 points (out of a possible 45 points). His CTS team won the overall, and although teammates scored a few points on the last day, he basically singlehandedly won the team prize himself.

Womens Race Report -

The women's race ended up an inadvertant nailbiter when the overall leader, Jolie Goldstein (Sleepy Hollow), did not enter the race. With an 8 point lead, she had not realized that the last week was worth 10 points for the win. Penny Buchar (WebEvent.com), in second, worked superhard to try and win the woman's race. In the end though, Pam Allesio (Verizon), wife of Anthony Allesio, won the race, preserving the top three overall standings. Only three points separated the top women - another week might have had a different result.

Junior Race Report -

The Junior's final race was marred by a lack of racers. However, nothing can be taken away from Joshua Gerwitz's (NECSA) brilliant ride. He ended up working superhard in a break and won the race. He demonstrated a brilliant level of form, and his riding showed his confidence in his strength. Matt Mollo (Unattached) rode himself right onto the podium, just squeezing past Conrad Lebas (CCB). David Wiswell (NECSA) finished second overall although he was not present for the final race.

Cat 4 Race Report -

The Cat 4 race seemed to be center stage for Sal Abbruzzese (Moneygram). Although he did not win until the last day, he also never placed worse than third. Hungry to prove earn that elusive victory, he decisively won the field sprint, destroying the competition. His overall lead of 18 points is worth more than the last two week's worth of victories. His consistency is something to be admired, and his spirit in pursuing the goal admirable.

Cat 5 Race Report -

The Cat 5 race finished in a head to head finish way in front of everyone else. Each week, as a Cat 3 racer, I've watched the Cat 5's race around, astounded by the immense pressure being applied at the front of the field. Two of the protagonists fought it out for the finish, with a winner take all on the last day. Richard Raulo (unattached but picked up by WebEvent.com on the last day) and Travis Turner (unattached) finished the day, in that order, separated by only a bike length. Tied on points before the start, the finish determined the overall standings. Keith Jenning, one of four (!) riders tied for third place at the start of the day, finished the series in third place, with a win and 4th and 5th place during the series.

Overall, a great series, with incredible racing in all the categories, either very close or very, very dominating. We had a few crashes in the field with two ambulance calls, and our wishes for a speedy recovery go out to all the riders who were hurt.

Thanks and see you next year,
Aki
