I'll try and put in race reports. All reports can be considered totally fictional. If you would like to correct any report (making it less fictional), please feel free to contact me (through bikereg, the blog, etc)
Cat 5 A - The first race of the day ended with Samuel Hornberger (Gotham Bikes) taking the win. Seamus Powell (Devo/Windham Mountain Outfitters) took second, Tim Inall (Bethel Cycle) third, and William Buick (Gould Academy) fourth. Evan Thomas (Unattached) finished fifth, with Ray Prybylski (Yorktown Cycles) took sixth.
Cat 5 B - The race was marked by a serious two man attack. Two riders took off early in the race. The field splintered in )the chase, the front fragmenting as the chasers pushed the pace. Ultimately successful in the chase, the field regrouped for the finale. 258 made a move with a lap to go. With the field looking around, he made it to the line solo. A strong sprint propelled Richard Bardwell (CLR) to the line in second, with Frank O'Reilly (Unattached) following in third. Michael Keen (Bike Depot) took fourth, Kyle Herihy (Connecticut Coast Cycle) fifth, and Thomas Thorton (Target Training) sixth.
Cat 4 Report: Most of the racers in this race would point to Guido Wollmann (Unattached) as the strongman of the race. As such he's heavily marked and rarely able to utilize his powerful time trialing skills. Today was such a day. Although he'd been conservative in his attacks throughout the race, his big effort with three laps to go came to naught. He had gone after a very strong Pawling Cycle and Sport rider Robert Kelley, teammate (and brother?) of the winner from last week. Pawling is a team that has done well in the 4s in prior years. The team sent this guy off in search of a solo win (as well as to allow his teammates to sit behind any chasers). As the bell rang he had a good 10 to 15 second gap.
Wollmann followed expectations, went to the front, and pulled hard for most of the last lap. He followed this strong effort with an unexpected jump early in the sprint, desperate to catch the breakaway rider. He managed to gap the field, catch the break, and win the race. John O'Fallon (Connecticut Coast Cycle), led out ably by teammate Todd Nicotra, took second place. Brian Kelley (Pawling Cycle and Sport), last week's winner, took third, followed by Pedro Sanchez (Danny's Cycle/Sebago Footwear) in fourth. Brian Sacawa (Kelly Benefit Stratagies/LSV Amateur Cycling) crossed the line in fifth, and Lee Davis (Pawling Cycle Sport) rounded out the top six.
Junior Report: Although alone in the Junior race, Jordan Strober (CRCA Junior Development) still had to deal with an aggressive Masters field that never eased up. He finished the race to take the Junior prize for the week.
Women's Report: Another strong field, just short of 40 riders like last week, started off the race. With Ann-Marie Miller (and her relentless pacemaking) missing from the line up, the race seemed more jumpy than normal. One strong individual, Silke Wunderwald (Team Kenda) battled it out with strong teams fielded by Radical Media, Anthem Sports, and TeaNY Cycling. Ultimately Radical Media came out for the better, with Margaret Shirley taking the win, with her teammate Evelyn Stevens close behind in third. Kathleen Billington (Anthem Sports) split the duo, with her teammate Beth Miller taking sixth. Wunderwald slotted into fourth, and Andrea Myers (Comedy Central/Sid's Bikes) took fifth.
Masters 40+ Report: Close to sixty riders struck out at the whistle, setting off in dry and still conditions. Two teams were most active, Keltic and Bethel Cycle. Both teams field powerful Masters racers, and they proved that last week's one-two placings were no fluke. Stephen Gray (Bethel Cycle), last week's second place finisher, scampered off the front chasing numerous primes, once opening up a substantial gap on the field.
But with teammates behind and a strong Keltic squad protecting their man Andy Ruiz's overall position, he sat up, waiting for the sprint. Last week he was pipped at the line, and this week he made sure that this wouldn't happen. He had two teammates lead him out, strongmen Brian Wolf and Chris DiMattio, and they strung out the field for Gray. Gray returned the favor by taking the field sprint, followed by Bill Pjontek (Battenkill-United). Ruiz managed fourth, followed closely by Target Training's Max Lippola. Jim Escobar (Honeywell) took fifth, and Rich Foley (Bethel Cycle) took sixth.
Cat 3-4 Report: A large 87 rider field set out for the race, and immediately the calm(er) wind and dry conditions led to some aggressive riding. Although the elastic threatened to snap a few times, the strung out field managed to regroup for the final few laps. Naysayers took their chances, with Jonathan Adler rider dangling off the front for the last couple laps. A regrouped field looked to catch them, and as the sprint wound up, the field caught the guys off the front. Bikeway's Robert Scott uncorked the field. Ultimately Akira Sato (Connecticut Coast Cycle) won the sprint, with David Kim (Christian Racing) a close second. Elias Bennet (BCA/Tosk) took third, with last week's winner Stephen Gray (Bethel Cycle) in fourth. Bill Pjontek (Battenkill-United) finished fifth, edging out Sam Dodge (Stage One Cycling) who took the final points place.
Cat P123 Report: A powerful field lined up for the day's finale, with Target Training obvious in their strength both in their legs as well as in their numbers. Although many riders tried to reduce the odds by escaping the field, only one break stayed away at the end. Target Training's Eneas Freyre and Peter Hurst (Connecticut Coast Cycling) worked hard to make their break stick. With the field rapidly closing on the last lap, Freyre took matters in his own hands and took off on his own, just barely holding off the field for the win. Chad Butts (Champion Systems) led the field in for second, followed by a the Stage One/Fusion Think duo Matt Inconglios Anthony Allesio. Chris Fisher (Priority Health Cycling) took fifth, and Juan Pimentel (Global Locate) took sixth.
