2009 Criterium de Bethel Results

Results are up. I'll fill in some of the other race reports when I get a chance.

Cat 5: A small and dedicated field took to the roads just as the rain started. Blowing sideways at times, the field stuck together, coming to the line for a field sprint. Jeffrey Weaver (The Devils Gear), dying a thousand deaths, crossed the line first, just in front of a fast closing Kyle Herlihy (Connecticut Coast Cycling). Third in the tight finish was Frank O'Reilly (Unattached), with fourth snagged by Thomas Thornton (Target Training). Evan Thomas (Unattached) took fifth, and Paul LeStage (Yorktown Cycles) finished sixth.

Cat 4: An early attack by Justin Tyberg (Bethel Cycle) came to naught, but the effort woke up the normally placid field. The registration girls took advantage of quiet time to go out and cheer on their favorite racer, Team DC Racing's Eugene Doherty. Patrick Littlefield (CRCA/FGX Racing) looked a little more aggressive, gaining a 10 second gap on the strung out field. The registration girls went out and cheered for Doherty again. Okay, one cheered for her dad, but they both cheered for Doherty. Then ran giggling back into the tent. Riders started to bridge up from the disintegrating field.

Field all together at 4 to go. Registration girls cheered on Doherty after a short break from cheering due to some riders registering (imagine that). 3 to go, all together. The riders are looking a bit haggard, the ones that had been attacking. Guido Wollmann (Unattached), in the leader's jersey, has done an amazingly patient race and looks very good. At the bell Doherty, cheered on by the registration girls, launched a last lap attack, the field in single file just behind him.

Wow, at the line it looked like a couple Pawling Cycle & Sport riders. We'll wait for the camera.

Arg the spreadsheet broke. Be a few minutes for results.

Pawling gets one two with Lee Davis leading in new overall leader Brian Kelley. Yorktown Cycle's John Bitetto took third, followed by the yellow jersey Guido Wollmann. James Rothwell (Target Training) finished fifth, and an aggressive Pedro Sanchez took sixth.

Womens: A small field set off in damp and misty conditions. CVC's Mary Martinez set off almost immediately, and the field has been content to follow about 10 or 15 seconds back. Seems like, at 13 laps to go, that the field is starting to wake up and react to the race long break. Wow, seven women bridged up to the break, splitting the field into two groups. A few hundred meters separate them.

Okay, most of the field is up at the front. The rest of the field has either dropped out or dropped off the pace. Five women have gone up the road, and five women are about 30 seconds behind. It looks like it'll finish this way. I'll try to get names.

I don't have names, but it seems like the original CVC rider Martinez is up there, along with Amada Braverman (TeaNY), two teammates from one team, and another rider. Sorry, my vantage point from inside the tent is not ideal.

The second group is all CVC with one Bethel Cycle rider breaking up the TTT look.

Andrea Myers (CRCA/Comedy Central-Sid's Bikes) takes the win! Martinez, after attacking at the gun, takes a hard earned second. Nancy Ford (USI) takes third, with Braverman fourth. Corinne Karmiel (CRCA/Comedy Central-Sid's Bikes) took fifth after the huge leadout for Myers, with Kimberly Edwards (CVC/Subaru of New England) winning the sprint behind for sixth.

Masters: The race happened. The Rick Break Effect took place, with two Ricks riding away from the field. Rick Magee (Bethel Cycle) won in a two up sprint over Rick Spears (Target Training). More info later.

Cat 3-4: A fast start and a small field ejected the race leader, Akira Sato (Connecticut Coast Cycling), inside the first three laps. This surprised everyone except the ejectee. The Jonathan Alder team sent their rider Kyle Peppo up the road, along with a friendly rival Colin Prensky (CRCA/Sanchez HOULIHAN). David Kim (Christian Cycling) joined the break, as did one other guy. Then took off Stephen Gray (Bethel Cycle), Tony Slokar (Jonathan Adler) on his wheel, and Bryan Haas (IRS Medic) following.

The friendly rival guy won the race. More to follow.

Typing Much Later, after the fact - Prensky bridged up to Peppo, dragging along Jackson Weber (Unattached), with Kim bridging up before the gap got too big. Kim looked to be in trouble, while Prensky seemed at ease, gapping the break on the hill regularly. After a bunch of waiting and watching laps, Gray launched a bit counter, marked immediately by Slokar and the attentive Haas.

When the chase made the junction, Prensky, Peppo, and Gray went immediately, with the other four looking around at each other. Kim tried to bridge on his own, but Slokar came across, towing an uncooperative Hass. Weber exploded and went back to the field.

Ultimately Prensky won the race, with Peppo second. Gray took third and the overall lead. Haas came around Slokar for fourth, and, back in the reduced field, Weber took out his frustrations by winning the field sprint.

P123s are up next.

Oh that looked hard. Four men finished clear of anyone else, and lots of guys were lapped. Connor Sallee (Williams Cycling) won. The rest of the places are below.

Typing Much Later - the race was just a series of leg breaking attacks, with every attack countered by another one. Four strong men went clear of the splintering field - Sallee, Eneas Freyre (Target Training), Brian Borgia (CRCA/Rapha Racing), and Barry Miller (MikeFrayseeSports.com). Although they seemed to cooperate here and there, the break members kept attacking each other at the end.

Behind the field disintegrated into multiple chase groups, with Kyle Wolfe (Keltics) and Stephen Gray (Bethel Cycle) - again! - the only riders not to get lapped.

Freyre put in a number of attacks, but came up short in a very tough sprint. Sallee won, as mentioned before, with Borgia second. Miller took third, with an exhausted Freyre crossing in fourth. Behind them a resurgent Wolfe took Gray at the line for fifth and sixth respectively.

We're cleaning up, packing up. A tough day of racing in damp, overcast conditions. Flahutes, all.
