Race reports...
Cat 5s A: The cooler weather did nothing to freeze the racers' enthusisasm as the day's racing got underway. With more than fifty riders registered, the 5s were split into two fields. The first race stayed together, despite the wind, and ended in a field sprint. Frank O'Reilly (Unattached) took the sprint, ahead of Richard Bardwell (CLR). Seamus Powell (Devo/Windham Mountain Outfitters) finished third, with Wayne Tice (Bryan's Bikes/CCI) in fourth. Gregg Giddes (Connecticut Coast Cycling) took fifth, followed by teammate Kyle Herlihy.
Cat 5s B: The second 5 race also finished in a field sprint, with Tim Inall (Bethel Cycle) taking a win. Herman Tola (Cafeteros) took second, with Samuel Hornberger (Gotham Bikes) third. Jerome Jousse (Unattached) crossed in fourth, followed by Evan Thomas (Unattached). Ray Prybylski (Yorktown Cycles) tucked into sixth place, earning the last point up for grabs for the day.
Cat 4: The big break of the day's racing went off within a couple laps when John O'Fallon (Connecticut Coast Cycling) and Bart McDonough (TargeTraining) went off the front in search of one of the primes offered at the race. The Teuton, Guido Wollmann (Unattached), always looking for chance to crack the field, bridged up shortly afterwards, and started pushing the pace.
McDonough, perhaps thinking ahead of the long drag to the end, dropped off the pace, leaving only two guys up front to fend off the field. Pawling Cycle & Sport, protecting their leader Brian Kelley, went to the front, but never got the pace above the critical threshold necessary to bring back a break.
Up front, with O'Fallon pulling into the wind, and Wollman pulling everywhere else, the duo extended their lead steadily, never once threatened by the field.
On the last lap they finished a la Hinault/Lemond, with Wollman pushing O'Fallon forward for the official win. With lots of fresh legs in the field, the sprint took a turn for the worse as a number of riders tumbled to the ground. Just ahead of the mayhem was the yellow jersey wearer Kelley, followed by Mark Salvagin (Team Bike Doter?). They were clear of the carnage and finished clear of the last two points placers, Bladdymir Coronel (Westwood Velo) and Donald Hard (Summit).
Women: Ann Marie Miller (CRCA/Sanchez) returned after a one week absence and raced with a vengeance. She capped off her ride with a decisive win in a field sprint, leading in a shattered field to the line. Margaret Shirtley (CRCA/Radical Media) proved her own strength by leading in the rest of the field and maintaining her now dominant overall position. Andrea Myers (CRCA/Comedy Central-Sids Bikes) rolled in for third, followed by CVC/Subaru-New-England's Kimberly Edwards. Nancy Ford (USI) and Amanda Braverman (CRCA/TeaNY) took fifth and sixth respectively, rounding out the points winners.
Masters: The next huge break of the day came in the Masters 40+ race. A strongly motivated Stephen Gray (Bethel Cycle) showed up to stamp his authority on this year's Masters races. Backed by the strong team captained by Greg Pelican, Gray decided to risk all. Instead of sitting up when he had a gap, as he did last week, he put his faith into his team's blocking abilities and forged off on his own. Never truly threatened, he soloed to a spectacular win.
Behind him, his team sent strongman Eric Pearce off in search of second place. A resurgent Jim Escobar clearly won the field sprint for third, followed by Target Training's Max Lippolis. Slotting into fith was Target Training head Rick Spears, followed by Pelican himself.
Cate 3-4: Another spectacular solo move marked the Cat 3-4 race. Last week Anthony Slokar (Jonathan Adler) sent out warning bells when he tried a big move with five laps to go. Only some energetic riding by the field brought him within range by the finish, and they swept up Slokar only meters from the finish. This week, with a stronger wind to discourage chasers, and with prior breaks in the 4s and Masters as examples, Slokar rocketed away from the field on only the second lap of the race.
His team immediately organized at the front, following every move, marking every pull. Slokar paid back their faith in him by doing a big solo all the way to the finish. Two riders, friendly NYC rivals of Slokar, took off with a few laps to go. Ethan Atkins (Metromint) finished second, with chase companion Andrew Nasca (Unattached) in third. The field, never really organized, sprinting in for the remaining three points spots, the first one snagged by a clear Jonathan Nash (Pawling Cycle & Sport). David Kim (Christian Cycling) tightened up the overall by taking second in the field, with Hammean Walker (CRCA) taking third in the field.
Pro-1-2-3: A break marked this race, but breaks usually happen in the P123 race. But, remarkably, today's break was dominated by three CCNS riders. Ron LaRose III, the Bethel overall winner for the 4s a couple years back, demonstrated his step up to the 2-3 level by infiltrating this break. His teammate David Hoyle also made it up, and the third teammate was none other than Aidan Charles, the "Charles" in CCNS's "Charles Coaching and Nutrition Services".
LaRose and Hoyle took first and second respectively, clear winners out of a strong break. Chad Butts (Champion System), one of the original break members, took a fine third. Eneas Freyre (Target Training) finished fourth, followed by one of the two Williams Cycling riders in the race (and a long time Bethel racer), Connor Sallee. Brian Borgia (CRCA/Rapha Racing) rounded out the points earners in sixth place.
