Pro 123 Race Report -

A strong field rode very aggressively, but with the powerful tailwind on the back stretch, the field ended up finishing together. It seemed at all riders were aggressive, with the Wheelworks riders Curt Davis and Chris Peck making an unexpected appearance. However, the strung out field never split, despite the strong efforts of all riders involved. Particularly aggressive were Pat McNamara (Rigdefield Bank), Charles Whalen (Sleepy Hollow), and Stephen Gray (Les Cyclistes) who seemed to be attacking at the start finish line every few laps. However, when it came down to it, Anthony Alessio (Laurel) capped off a brilliant ride by trouncing the field in the sprint. Finally scoring points (after 2 near misses), he demonstrated that he's riding at a much more mature level than his experience would imply. Gray, after finishing second to Alessio, commented that "the kid is untouchable right now". Coming from a seasoned and respected racer, those are strong and kind words.

Cat 3/4 Race Report -

The race seemed ripe for a decisive ride by one of the many overall contenders. With the overall leader Vincent Citron (Moneygram) missing, the opportunity was ripe for his (tied in points) rivals Matt Zacone (Westwood) and Brian Haas (Ridgefield Bank). David Ebeling (WebEvent.com), laying one point behind, was also eager to make an impression. The unusual wind, mimicking the first week, blew the riders down the backstretch and slowed them on the slightly descending first stretch. This made for fast riding, reducing the chances of breaks from working. In fact, with Citron missing, his Moneygram teammates were desperate to score points so that his rivals would not be able to score. This was the only thing they could do to keep him in the hunt for the overall victory. Extremely aggressive, they attacked all race long, with Zaccone's Westwood, Ebeling's WebEvent, and Beilby's Capital Bike squads stringing out the field to bring them back. Finally, with the race in the last five laps, the screws turned even harder. Leadout riders chased down fast and desperate last minute attacks. Gaps would crack open, only to be closed by riders at their limits. Then another surge would wreak havoc. This was by far the fastest closing laps of the 3/4 race. With about 400 meters to go, John Brown (unsure of team) rocketed out of the field with Ebeling and Aki Sato (New Canaan) in tow. He pulled them a few lengths clear of the field before pulling off at 200 meters, launching Ebeling into the sprint. Haas, starting the sprint from deep within the field, finished with a superb kick, cleanly winning the race in the last 3 or 4 meters. Visibly slowing, Ebeling hung on for second while Angel Santiago (Moneygram), trying to score maximum points, managed a great finish for third. Sato finished on Ebeling's wheel, edging out Paul Pertinato for fourth. Zaccone salvaged a point and kept himself high in the hunt for the overall. With winner and overall leader Haas unable to make the last week, the race is wide open, with 6 riders still able to pass Haas on points.

M40+ Race Report -

Morgan Stebbins (CTS) sewed up the masters race by winning it again. With an unassailable lead, he has won the overall race. Congratulations! However, this victory did not come easy. The race split wide open under the impetus of riders like Funk (GMBC), a few juniors, and Stebbins. Stebbins managed to escape Greg Pelican (Zephyr), effectively ending any chances of Pelican's chances for the overall. Funk fought Stebbins but was unable to beat him in the sprint. A great race by the strongest and most consistent M40 racer in the field.

Womens Race Report -

Jolie Goldstein (Sleepy Hollow) infiltrated the break in the M40/Jr/Wm race, hanging tough while riders like Stebbins, Funk, and Wiswell hammered at the front. After an amazing ride, she finished in the break, well in front of the next woman rider. With her consistent victories, she has extended her overall lead, putting her in good position for the April 22 final race. Penny Buchar (WebEvent.com) finished second to put her into second overall. And Pam Alessio (Verizon) placed third, enough to tie her for fourth overall.

Junior Race Report -

Unusually, a 7 or 8 rider group went off the front. Not unusual were the protagonists - a couple juniors including David Wiswell (NECSA) and Conrad Lebas (CCB), both strong and aggressive riders. Wiswell won the race, vaulting him into a tenuous, one point lead for the overall. With his closest competition his teammate Joshua Gerwitz, the NECSA team only needs to handle Matt Mollo in order to win the race overall. The team has dominated the Junior series, and looks in strong position to have at least one or two riders on the podium.

Cats 4 and 5 Race Report -

Due to an early thundershower, the Cat 5's and 4's raced together. Thunder, lightning, and a torrential downpour greeted the hardy racers eager to register for the first races of the day. Eventually, the 5's and 4's started together. With the Expert class mountain bikers (Cat 5's on the road) still super aggressive, the race was very fast. A couple crashes marred the race, but the riders were okay. In the end, Sal Abburzzese (Moneygram) scored second place points to remain in the lead overall, with only one rider within reach of defeating him. Tyler Johnson (unattached) won the race outright, while Richard Ralko (unattached, Cat 5) placed second in the field sprint to take the race for the Cat 5's. His victory ties him on points with Travis Turner (unattached), but because of his higher placing, puts him into the lead overall. The last week promises to be exciting!

Please note: On March 25th the officials were able to pick a number of places past the top 6 in the Cat 4's (about 12 places), 3/4's (22 places), a few more M40, and a few 1/2/3's. Please write if you would like to see if we have you. Include your race number and what place you think you got. You may also submit a race report or corrections to one. You can do it anonymously. I will combine multiple ones. Thanks, Aki.
