Cat 3/4 Race Report -
A very aggressive 3/4 race ended up tightening an already close overall race. With the overall leader Brian Haas (Ridgefield Bank) missing, the 3 riders tied for second place marked each other. The three, including last year's winner Dave Ebeling (WebEvent.com), last year's second overall Vincent Citron (Moneygram), and Matt Zaccone (Westwood), all brought serious team support. Marking one another (and their teammates), none of the trio were able to get away. John McGovern (Sony) took advantage of the lack of wind and risked a long, solo ride. He attacked and time trialed off the front for about 10 laps, but was caught by a field led by both Zaccone and Ebeling. The front of the group kept splintering, but McGovern went again, and held a narrow 20 second gap all the way to the line. A most impressive race. Last year's Cat 5 overall winner Anthony Allesio (Laurel) launched a sharp attack with 4 to go. Within 1/4 lap he had a 50 meter gap and held it to the end.
A crucial error on Moneygram's part resulted in Vincent Citron (Moneygram) placing behind his teammate Angel Santiago. This keeps Citron tied overall in points with Haas and Zaccone. With Ebeling and Ian Beilby (Capital Bike) both only one point behind the first three, the 3/4 race has tightened up to the point of bursting. Both Ebeling and Beilby were unable to score points in today's critical race.
M40+ Race Report -
Today affected this race the most. Due to the combined fields, the race started promptly at 10:30. Morgan Stebbins (CTS), fresh off of a victory in New York City earlier in the morning, arrived just as the field was lining up. He sat at the back until he warmed up, then rocketed off the front. He won clear of the field. The second and third place overall riders did not score. Greg Pelican (Zephyr) flatted, and John Funk (GMBC) showed up late and ended up racing the Pro/1/2/3 race. Charlie Mattison capped off a great day to capture second, and Jon Monson (Ridgefield Bank) showed his consistency in placing third. This brings him to 4th overall.

Cat 4 Race Report -
Due to abysmal conditions (40's and damp) only 16 Cat 4's showed up to race. The officials decided to combine them with the M40/W/Jr race, making a total field of only 40 riders. However, with 4 overall races at stake, the racing was aggressive The 4's added to the mix by adding some depth to the field. James McDade (CRCA) capped off the day by winning the 4's race. This brings him up to 3rd overall. Sal Abburzzese (Moneygram) increased his overall lead by placing third. Andreas Daiber (unatt) continued to impress by placing second.
Cat 5 Race Report -
Once again, the Cat 5's were marked by super aggressive riding by expert class mountain bikers. Groups were away almost every lap, with counter attacks launched immediately. With a lack of wind (!), the speeds were higher. Marred by a small crash (no serious injuries but some tweaked equipment), the race looked like it might have come down to a breakaway finish. But in the last 3 laps, the field stayed together, everyone gambling on their sprint. Brenden Shafer (NECSA) finished off a great day to win the race, followed by Anthony Grabiec (unatt) and Sean Andros (WebEvent.com). Travis Turner eked out his overall lead by a point - but with two races left, the Cat 5 race is still wide open.
Please note: On March 25th the officials were able to pick a number of places
past the top 6 in the Cat 4's (about 12 places), 3/4's (22 places),
a few more M40, and a few 1/2/3's. Please write if you would like to see if we have you. Include your race number and what place you think you got.
You may also submit a race report or corrections to one.
You can do it anonymously. I will combine multiple ones. Thanks, Aki.
