Pro 123 Race Report -
An early break in gusty winds saw Charles Whalen (Sleepy Hollow), Darby Thomas (NECSA),
Curt Davis (Wheelworks), and Anthony Allesio (Laurel) off the front.
Allesio sat up after a few laps and returned to the field.
A chase of six, including Andy Ruiz (GMBC), Brian Wirtz (Zephyr),
Stephen Badger (Remax) set off in pursuit. Eventually, the leading trio
lapped the field, with Whalen finishing off a strong performance by leading out and
winning the sprint. Ruiz won a hotly contested chase group sprint.
Whalen's efforts have earned him the overall lead, with a 2 point lead over
second placed Curt Davis. Unfortunately, it seems that Davis and teammate
Chris Peck may not be returning, off to do some "real" races. The race will miss their presence.
Cat 3/4 Race Report -
Aggression marked the day as Moneygram, WebEvent.com, and Capital Bike marked all the moves. After a few early attacks, one stuck with current overall leader David Ebeling (WebEvent.com), second placed overall Vincent Citron (Moneygram), and Matt Zacone (Westwood). Capital Bike (out of the Albany area) chased ferociously after realizing the overall leaders were up the road. Citron came off the break as a small chase group bridged, pulled by (among others), Anthony Allesio (Laurel), Brian Haas (Ridgefield Bank). Salvatore Abbruzzese (Moneygram) sat in, marking the move for Citron. The break lapped the field, the chase group unlapped but half a lap behind. The field sprinted at 2 to go, and a crash at the bottom of the hill caused by a cramping racer (yours truly) wreaked havoc in the field. Ebeling was actually caught behind it but moved up and got back on his break-mates' wheels. In the sprint, Beiley went from a long way off, winning decisively from Haas and Zaccone. The overall race, tied before the day's race, tightened up with Haas in first place overall by one point and a three way tie for second place (in points) between Beilby, Zaccone, and Ebeling. Last year, the race ended with a three way tie, with Christian Stahl (NECSA) winning from Ebeling and Citron. This year promises to be just as exciting.
M40+ Race Report -
John Funk (GMBC) attacked early and woke up the field.
Almost all of the contenders were on his wheel quickly and after two furious
laps he backed down. A couple laps later he went again hard with Josh Gerwitz (NECSA), who won the race overall. This time only about 8 guys made it to his wheel. After
about 5 laps the group cracked leaving only Gerwitz, Funk, Morgan Stebbens (CTS) and
Greg Pelican (Zephyr) out front. Funk and Gerwitz pushed the group hard. With 6 laps to
go the group caught the field. Morgan Stebbens out sprinted Funk for the
win, Pelican placed third. Pelican, in a demonstration of sportsmanship, told the others he wouldn't contest the sprint as he was unable to pull through towards the end.
Womens Race Report -
The women sat in the field of M40/Jr/Wm and fought out a hotly contested sprint. With the overall leader missing, Jolie Goldstein (Sleepy Hollow) clearly won the sprint to bring herself within two points of the overall lead. Penny Buchar (WebEvent.com) beat Hiroko Shimada (Don's Cycle) for second.
Junior Race Report -
The NECSA team worked solidly to stamp their mark of domination in the junior race series. Rallying behind their overall Junior leader Josh Gerwitz, they catapulted him in a virtually untouchable lead. If he places higher than 4th in any of the next three weeks, the overall race will be only for second place.
Cat 4 Race Report -
A six man break finished almost 40 seconds clear of the field, led in by NECSA teammates Justin Torrellas and Rich Hollenbeck. The two juniors demonstrated savy and strong riding, attacking and covering each other all the time. They left it to the others to bridge gaps and chase, and won in the six up sprint. Salvatore Abbruzese (Moneygram) showed his consistent form by placing once again (he'd do the same in the Cat 3/4 race). Andreas Daiber (unattached), Oscar Osario (New Canaan Cycling), and Craig Milano (WebEvent.com) finished off their race in the break, a difficult feat considering the constant attacking and bridging.
Cat 5 Race Report -
Keith Jenning (Unattached) clearly won the field sprint, putting about 6-7 bikes lengths between him and the second place rider before soft pedaling across the line. The race was safe and strung out, with virtually a full field of racers. Travis Turner, the only one of the top 3 overall to race today, brought himself into the lead by placing 3rd in the field. The Cat 5 field has been dominated by Expert class NORBA racers looking for some faster road training. Because of this, the field has been strung out many times, looking more like a Cat 3/4 race than a Cat 5 race.
Please note: On March 25th the officials were able to pick a number of places
past the top 6 in the Cat 4's (about 12 places), 3/4's (22 places),
a few more M40, and a few 1/2/3's. Please write if you would like to see if we have you. Include your race number and what place you think you got.
You may also submit a race report or corrections to one.
You can do it anonymously. I will combine multiple ones. Thanks, Aki.
