These race reports are personal and hearsay observations by the writer. If you would like to send in race information, please do. The reports will be updated at least weekly, if not more often.
Pro 123 Race Report -
The first 1/2/3 race ended up super aggressive, with no one able to break cleanly away. None of the breaks contained the "ideal" mix of racers from Bethel, Remax, Kissena, Sleepy Hollow, and the NECSA teams. Most breaks were caught within a few laps and the last one was caught at the bottom of the hill. This set up the sprint, with Remax doing a phenomenal job. John Idone (Remax) and Anthony Alessio (Remax) finished side by side, well clear of the next few racers. The rest of the front group trickled in after making a stupendous effort to close that last lap gap. Alex Weil (Kissena) finished close behind in third, while David Ebeling (WebEvent.com) fought hard for fourth. The first Category 3 racers finished in the points, with Thomas Cromie placing a very hard earned 5th place. Ray Diaz capped off an aggressive race with a 6th place.
Cat 3/4 Race Report -
Due to the nice weather (sunny, not-that-cold, and a relative lack of wind), the 3/4 race ended up with a large field of over 70 racers. There were three main protaganists - Jorge Ortiz (Tarrytown CC), the Stage One team, and the Capitol Bike team (from Albany). Jorge attacked at the gun and singlehandedly held off the field for the first 5 or 6 laps. A former pro, he and his squad of racers rode super aggressively during the race. But to anyone observing the race, the most active teams had to be Stage One and Capitol Bike. Every break contained their riders, and with both sporting orange/blue kits, it seemed like the front of the field and the breaks were always orange/blue. A midrace spill paused the aggression in the race (everyone up front sat up for half a lap). However, a more massive last lap crash with only about 500 meters to go (someone came across someone else's wheel) only inspired the field to jump a little early. Super aggressive riding, along with some deft bike handling skills, determined the sprint order as the field reached the bottom of the hill. Stage One had three riders up front and led out the field. Brian Girard (Stage One) capped off their excellent team performance by taking the sprint. Ortiz finished second, and I believe Thomas Cromie (unattached) finished third. Bryan Haas (Ridgefield Bank) earned points in 4th, while Patrick Lynch (Zephyr) and David Wiswell (East Coast) had excellent finishes as well.
M40+ Race Report -
The M40 race started up where it left off last year. Morgan Stebbins (Bethel Cycle), sporting his new team's yellow/black kit, won the race outright out of a compact breakaway. This makes 6 Bethel wins in a row for him (5 from last year). Obviously a favorite to win the Series again this year, he showed up with a much stronger team numerically speaking. His help included teammate Greg Pelican (Bethel Cycle) who attacked on the last lap. This forced the others to chase (ultimately led by the Juniors in the break) and set up Stebbins for the sprint. Chris Ryan (CRCA/not sure of the name of the team-sponsor) finished second in the break. Ivan Solero (Les Cyclists/Bethel) captured third while Pelican rolled in for fourth. Brian Wolf (Bethel Cycle) earned fifth and Horacio Ahumada (USI) placed sixth.
Womens Race Report -
The first women's race lacked last year's overall winner and seemed wide open once again. In addition, women who last year raced men's races chose to enter the women's event instead. This added some serious horsepower to the field, with the likes of Laura Summers (WebEvent.com) and Heather Peck (Independent Fabrications) participating. Coming down to a field sprint, Summers led them to the line while her teammate, Penny Buchar (WebEvent.com) placed second. Pam Alessio (Verizon) placed third and Peck. Hiroko Shimada (Verizon), rode probably the most aggressive race, paying a small price at the finish as she finished fifth. Mary Ellen Calandrillo (NJ Rock N Road) earned the last remaining overall point in sixth.
Junior Race Report -
NECSA decided to finish a training camp by bringing their team to the Bethel Spring Series. The riders seemed a breed apart with high cadences, fluid pedaling, and a willingness to just attack and attack. However, last year's lone NECSA spoiler, Conrad Lebas (CCB), triumphed over the numerically superior team. He did so by infiltrating the break (evening the numerical odds). Josh Thorton (NECSA), the break's antagonist, punctured out of the break, handing the victory to Lebas. Michael Babe (NECSA), still recovering from very recent surgery, salvaged something by finshing second for the NECSA team. Keith Jennings (Unattached) and Kareen Harris (East Coast) earned points for third and fourth respectively.
Cat 4 Race Report -
The Bethel team did an amazing team race and managed to help Ian Strever (Bethel Cycle) ride away from the frustrated field. As one friendly competitor pointed out, "You guys rode good. I hated that." or something to that effect. With six teammates discouraging any chases, Strever maintained a tenuous 5 - 10 second gap for several laps. Although he looked blown at the bell lap, he rallied strongly to finish just in front of the field. Jeff Murray (Unattached) led the tight field in, with Paul Levine (Team Colavita) earning the third paying spot. Andrew Kalter (Ridgefield Bank), a protagonist from last year's race, earned fourth. Eric Bakken (Bethel Cycle) managed to save something for the finish and placed 5th, while Istvan Benyei (USI) snagged the last point.
Cat 5 Race Report -
A minor spill marred the Category 5 race, but it was otherwise a great event. With a full field and nice weather, the new racers started their season aggressively. Although there were many attacks and counter-attacks, the most threatening attack was one by two Ridgefield Bank racers at the bell. They had a good 50 meter gap. Andrew Lobsenz (Bethel) pulled virtually the entire lap to set up the field for the sprint. However, his sprinter suffered a mechanical, so just as the sprint started, Lobsenz and his sprinter were both out. David Norwood (Unattachecd) took best advantage of the furious chase and came across the line clear of the field. Rob Scott (Unattached) placed second. John Loughrey (Don's Cycle) placed third after making a tremendous effort only a few laps earlier. Edward Kowiczyk (Unattached) got fourth, Brian Kelly (Unattached) fifth, and Joe Salem (Ridgefield Bank) salvaged a point for his team.
